![]() ![]() Hope this clarifies any questions on this subject. My company also mods Music Man amps quite extensively: Fuchs Audio Technology They can sound pretty decent when dialed up right, and some people have come up with mods for those amps to improve them like Ed Goforth. The majority of the RD-50 preamp circuits were solid state, but the second channel used that 12AX7 to produce a warm compressed tube overdrive. It's different from the Schmidt style diff-amp driver in traditional Fenders and overloads differently for sure.Īs far as the RD-50's, they used the 12AX7 at a fairly low plate voltage as an overdrive stage or sometimes called a limiter stage. Fender used this in the Princeton's and a few other models, but it was nothing innovative nor unusual and was used in audio and guitar amps by many companies. That cool Joe, I also prefer a lower gain NOS preamp tube in my Tube Driver. ![]() Tonewise, I would perhaps place the Chandler somewhere between a Tube Screamer and a BK Tube Driver. The Music Man amps used this with the tube driver, before they designed the IC/Transistor driver in the later amps. The Chandler Tube Driver (in Davidâs rig from ) has a slightly warmer tone than the new BK Butler model (in Davidâs rig from ). I was hoping it would be Gilmour in a Box too - it isn't.In the case of Dr Key, a two section tube like a 12AX7 can be a voltage amp, followed by what's often called a "Concertina" phase splitter, which is a stage that takes a single ended signal from the first half of the tube, and produces two equal but opposite phased signals to drive a pair of power tubes push pull. I just find the TubeDriver really isn't too useful. And yes, I'm running a strat through a vintage Hiwatt. I know it's going to sound wrong, but I use a FullDrive 2 for all the lower gain stuff, and a ToneBone Hot British for the high gain stuff. Your money is better served getting a very nice Muff or a different tasty od. I guess what I'm saying here is it is, in my mind, in no way essential at all. In other words, it's on for perhaps 5% of the total show. Personally, Money and the intro to Time are the only songs I even use it on. I find that the pedal sounds _EXACTLY_ like the solo from Money - so if that's the only sound you want, it's a great way to spend three hundred bucks I find it's a bit of a one trick pony - I can never lower the gain quite as much as I'd like (I even emailed them at Chandler or wherever, they said use a 12AT7 - I did, no dice). Once you get it dialed in, though, it's pretty nice. Let me try to explain.īasically, it's like everyone says - it is very hard to get the right sound out of it. It's kind of good and not good all rolled into one. I have an original Chandler Tube Driver (duh, I'm in a Floyd tribute act ). ![]()
